Term 2
Trip to Hawthorne Trenches
We visited Hawthorne Trenches in Elham, these are replica trenches but allowed us to experience walking through the trenches and living in them as soldiers did in WW1. We compared both German and British trenches and looked at No Man’s land between the two. We had the opportunity to look at replica artefacts, trying on jackets, hats and feeling the size of the rifles. We had a fantastic time!
Clay Poppies
Look at our fantastic finished clay poppies, come to our learning landing on 16th December to see all of our finished poppies together in our Remembrance Gallery!
Christmas
Long time ago in Bethlehem (so the Holy Bible said), Mary’s boy child (Jesus Christ) was born on Christmas day so Democracy have started the celebrations early. We have all made wonderful robins for the Christmas garland decorations in the hall. It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!!
Civillian Casualties in WW1
We have been researching casualties both civilians and soldiers during ww1. The tragic devastating loss of life has been compared across countries and the full enormity of the war has been revealed.
World War I
This week we have been finishing off our clay poppies by adding red paint and then black details. We are looking forward to showing them off to you at our learning landing!
We have been focusing on the Battle of the Somme, looking at the mistakes made in this conflict, creating a heatmap showing the number of fatalities in each area of the battlefield and then writing from the perspective of a Allied soldier, living in the trenches.
Children in Need Fun Run
We took part in a Children In Need fun run on Friday, we tried to aim to run at least 13 laps around our playground in 20 minutes, some of us managed a whopping 20!! Well done Year 6- it was amazing to see us participating whether we ran, jogged, walked or skipped!
Dover Light Up Project
On Friday 15th November 2024, we were fortunate enough to take part in the Dover Light Up Project and make our own winter lanterns. These will be used in the Dover Winter Parade on 7th December in Pencester. It would be fantastic to have as many representatives from Year 6 as possible in the parade.
Causes of WW1
Democracy have continued their work on WW1, looking at the possible causes of the war and considering how Europe has changed since 1914. We then created timelines of the main events during the war.
Remembrance
This term our topic is remembrance, we have been learning about the significance and meaning behind poppies. For our learning lift-off, we made clay poppies – inspired by the Tower of London display. We have also adapted the poem In Flanders Fields with our own words and phrases.
