Term 3
Big Idea
History: Who were the Ancient Greeks? What was their legacy? Their expanding empires helped to spread ideas about architecture, food, entertainment, literature, science, medicine and politics across the globe.
As their empires ended, other cultures rose to prominence, absorbing and passing on their own ideas and cultures – creating the world we know today.
Geography: As geographers we then spend some time thinking about the modern day and considering, ‘How is England different to Greece?’ comparing the Geographical features of England to Greece.
NSPCC Number Day 7.2.2025
Spaghetti and Meatballs.
We based our first activity on the book ‘Spaghetti and Meatballs’ to help Mr and Mrs Comfort seat their 32 guests on 8 tables , so they could still be sociable.
We realised that if the tables were joined together along their sides, 32 people could not sit down. Joining 2 sides together means that 2 seats aren’t there.
We had to be creative!
We became TTRS champions by playing the different games. We wanted to play Studio to find our rock star status. We all improved –Rock Legends, rock stars and Headliners.
With Mrs Bird in the afternoon, we created our own board games and played them.
Music Workshop
We were very lucky on Tuesday that Mr Cook and a musician came into school to work with children in the school band.
‘I loved learning new notes.’
‘It was great playing with the children in Respect class, because they are learning the clarinet.’
‘I love practising my trumpet at home.’
Congratulations!
Making Pittas
‘We needed to mix yeast with warm water to make the yeast bubble.’
‘Then we added bread flour, salt and olive oil.’
‘We had to mix the ingredients by hand. It was slippery, gooey, sticky but felt great.’
‘Over an hour near the radiator, the yeast made them double in size.’
‘We needed to knead the dough until it was soft and silky.’
‘ They were delicious, we packed them full of flavour. Yum, yum.’
Greek Pittas
As part of out DT project, we have been tasting pitta breads and Greek foods that can be fillings for the pitta.
‘The feta was crumbly and soft. I really liked it dipped in honey because it made it sweeter.’
‘I wasn’t keen on the sun-dried tomatoes because they had a bitter taste and not sweet like the tomatoes I like.’
‘The cucumber was very watery but crunchy, I want it in my pittas because it has a different texture.’
‘I hadn’t ever tasted olive oil, but it was lovely. It was light and went really well with the pittas bread.’
‘I can’t wait to make my own pitta, even the olives weren’t horrible. I’m going to put them in!’
Maths
This week, we have been learning to multiply by 2 digit numbers. We have worked really hard with this and have been collaborative cats and very open-minded octopi.
English
In English, one of our reading skills this term is summarising. We made comic strips to do this for the myth ‘Theseus and the Minotaur’.
Learning Lift Off
We spent the whole day investigating Greek myths and especially the mythical creatures. Firstly, we read Greek myths, looking out for hero/heroine, their quest, the mythical creatures, the special object they had to retrieve, the gods, who helped or hindered them and how they overcame the evil at the end.
Afterwards, we choose a mythical creature and used our retrieval and inference skills to pick out the detailed descriptions about them and their traits. Using our knowledge of them, we create our own creature and created a theatre mask with our beast on it. We will use these to write a descriptive piece of writing about it next week.
