Term 3

Big Idea

History: Who were the Ancient Greeks? What was their legacy? Their expanding empires helped to spread ideas about architecture, food, entertainment, literature, science, medicine and politics across the globe.

As their empires ended, other cultures rose to prominence, absorbing and passing on their own ideas and cultures – creating the world we know today.

Geography: As geographers we then spend some time thinking about the modern day and considering, ‘How is England different to Greece?’ comparing the Geographical features of England to Greece.

Greek Pittas

This week we have been tasting pitta bread and traditional Greek fillings to go inside. We made our own pitta dough and then filled them with our own choice of fillings, The children were great Open Minded Octopus and Adventurous Aardvarks, trying lots of new foods. They thought about the taste, texture and smells of the food and discussed which food might go with which. They planned, made and evaluated their pittas. Great work Respect class, they were delicious!

Learning Lift Off

For our learning lift off for this term’s topic, The Ancient Greeks, we created our own Greek mythical creature. We started by reading lots of Greek myths including Perseus, Daedalus and Icarus, Pandora and Theseus and the Minotaur. We took inspiration from these to think about our own mythical creature, considering their back stories, what quests they may go on and what they may look like. We worked in groups to think about and collect lots of adventurous vocabulary for our creatures, which we have used this week to write a character description about our creature.

Our final task was to recreate our mythical creatures using a mask. As you can see from the pictures, the children did a great job creating some amazingly creative mythical creature masks!
