Term 3
Art
As part of our preparation for our Maya learning landing, we have been discovering the art of Mayan weaving. Carefully sticking to the instructions from Mrs Wright, we have succeeded in some fantastic tapestries. We hope you come to our learning landing so that we can teach you to weave.
Number Day
The NSPCC Maths Rock day was tremendously successful in Democracy. We loved the maths escape room, creating graphs for the world population, rocking on ttRockstars and of course, dressing up as Black Sabbath (or was that Mr Cook?).
PE
Democracy PE this term is enjoying and learning the great sport of tennis. Quickly, we have realised that control of the racket and ball is a difficult task and that, tennis is a very hard game. However, we have been open-minded and adventurous aardvarks in our quest for some form of control. Slowly but surely, improvements are being made!
Mayan Research
Democracy Class have been using our previous knowledge of other civilisations and compared them to our new research on the Maya. We have been looking at gods of the sun that were worshipped in Egyptian, Roman, Greek and the Mayan eras. From this we were able to draw out similarities and differences. We enjoyed this so much that we looked also at other gods of rain, love, harvest and some of us explored the creators of all gods. It is fascinating!
Mayan Pots
Having made our Mayan chocolate pots on the learning landing, we have waited patiently for them to fully dry. This week, we enjoyed painting them in the traditional limited pigments the Mayans would have resourced over 3000 years ago.
Maths
We have been working hard on fractions, decimals and percentages this term and have made stunning progress. To compliment are great skills, we tried Mayan maths using their number system with the base of 4 and 20. We have provided some examples of our findings. Some of us completed BODMAS calculations in Mayan.
English
Our class reader this term is ‘Oh Maya Gods’ by Maz Evans. We have been avidly submerged the mystical world of the football-loving Vesper and super bright Aster. Will Elliot and Virgos beloved children find their way safely through the underworld with resident Maya bad boy Kizin and his Lords and Ladies of Death!!
Mayan Research
As part of our Mayan research, we have been plotting the Mayan era in relation to other civilisations on a timeline. This was fairly complicated but was really illustrative of when the Mayan people were at their zenith.
We have also been reading about how the Mayans farmed foods and which particular crops were the most significant to their culture. Many Mayan staples are foods that we eat in our homes on a regular basis.
This term’s mathematics is concentrated primarily on fractions, decimals and percentages! We have really hit the ground running and we are feeling incredibly aspirational!
Mayan Chocolate Pot Making
This term, we are studying the Ancient Mayans. During our learning lift-off, we learnt about their most precious item – chocolate. The Mayans loved to create a chocolate drink – the earliest form of Hot Chocolate! We created our own Mayan chocolate pots out of clay, which were similar to those used at this time. We also tasted a range of different chocolates and evaluated them.
